Project of the senses
Our first project is on senses and this is the first of three for this term, and is due on the 22nd October, normally this would consist of panic followed by more panic thanks to having a project due so early. However this project is different from the normal DAT projects we get given. This one is a lot more creative and we are free to express how we do the project however we want.
The project is on sense manipulation, which is using one sense to stimulate another or manipulating it. For example we could change what we taste by our sense of smell or what we hear but changing what we see. So it sounds straightforward but it is surprising how misleading some senses can be as we learned in our introduction lesson.
Hannah gave us each an envelope consisting of 3 different items inside and we had to pick one of the items and draw them, there was a catch; we were not allowed to look into the envelope we had to just use our sense of touch to work out what the item was we were drawing. We got to spent 2-3 minutes working out what our items were before we had to pick an item to draw them with. They were not all standard drawing tools though there were some scissors some clay, different coloured pen and pencils for us to pick from. Due to the rough texture of my item I picked to use the scissors not to use to cut out the shape on the paper but instead to carve the paper into the shape of my item to try and represent the texture.
We carried on doing similar exercises exploring the different senses and how they can change the way we view things. We then were told about the brief for this project and that we can if we want link it into a piece of text called invisible cities, which is a book that talks about different cities in a very unusual manner but I will talk more about that later. I got the city of the dead which I am pretty happy to get as I feel like I can have a bit of fun with that.
