Research on safety coffins
safety coffins or security coffins as they were also known , were first brought out in the 18th century after rumours that people were being buried alive. (Newitz, d.u.).A common element between all the different kinds of safety coffins was a way for the dead/the living to communicate with people above ground. A popular design features was some rope that when pulled would ring a bell to alert people above the ground. However instead of a bell some coffins had a flag that would be raised in the event of someone still being alive (australianmuseum, 2009).So back in the 18th and 19th century there was a real fear of being buried alive. This gives me an idea about making a hand coffin to allow me to burrey the user's hand alive. I will try and mount a camera in there so the audience can see these hands being buried in a film like fashion.
